Fatty's Point.

A startled, shocked squirrel rushes past the external frame of my upstairs window: in ten years, it is first time anything living has ever crossed these tracks.

I hop off my bed and glance outside. I watch on as a solidly chubby tabby cat sits proud atop the flat roofed extension next door; it is he who has caused the fear in our nut chasing friend. Fatty, as I have christened him - for obvious reasons, glares at me with a vague yet firm expression. The message in his eyes conveys that he is a man amongst felines; that he is the boss, the leader, and the surrounding territory enjoyed by random members of the animal kingdom and me, is his domain. By scaring the squirrel across my window, he is proving this determined of points to one person alone – me... and he knows it too…

Twenty four hours before, I had caught sight of Fatty slumped on a far roof trying to enjoy a spot of personal relaxation time; most likely after a hard day of eating food, chasing butterflies, flattening spiders with his paws, and partaking in general lazing around cat duties. His rest however, had been ruined by a couple of cheeky magpies; as they perched on either end of the 6 x 6 foot in diameter flat shelter he rested upon, and then proceeded to tease and distort the tired chubby cat, by flying between roof corners, and squawking the equivalent of offensive bird swearwords, each time Fatty tried in-vain to catch them. The birds were quite clearly antagonising the moggy on purpose; most likely as an act of wrath for one of the spiders he had previously picked on, who the birds had formed an alliance with.

Eventually realizing they had made their point; as well as physically and mentally wearing out the overweight feline, the magpies flew away - leaving a tired and embarrassed cat to dwell on his embarrassment. Fatty - which his instinctive vanity, and desperately glancing around hoping no one had noticed, had his worst fears confirmed when his eyes met the only ones who knew of his shame – mine; watching with considered interest from my window. Though I never realized at that moment, his frozen, laser beam stare conveyed a simple message to me - his human cousin... "Those magpies were lucky, they caught the unguarded royal one during a bad moment. I'll show you, hooman. I'll show you."...

The next day he did exactly that; by scaring the squirrel, and making sure I was there to witness every ounce of his awesomeness. I now wonder which creature was watching the cowardly squirrel, as he ran from Fatty; and how Mister squirrel regained his own wounded pride…

  2. Thanks. Fatty is a mean machine, and takes no prisoners. I need his permission just to feed the birds. :-)

  3. Oh Fatty, your masculinity was never questioned. You graciously allowed the Magpies to have their momentary fun. A true feline gentleman.
